The Hate U Give is a 2017 Young Adult novel by Angie Thomas. It is about a Black teenage girl named Starr Carter who witnesses a police officer shoot and kill one of her closest friends. 

In Every Mirror She’s Black is a novel by Lola Akinmade Åkerström, a Nigerian photographer and writer. It provides a look at the intersecting identities of three Black women living in Sweden, which is another look at race and racism in another part of the world. This book is not specifically aimed at younger readers.

Stamped: Racism, Anti-Racism, and You is a 2020 rewrite of Dr. Kendi’s 2016 nonfiction book, Stamped from the Beginning. The 2020 version was created specifically for readers aged 12 and up with the aim of introducing young people to anti-racist theory while also explaining the history of racism in America.

Born a Crime: Stories from a South African Childhood by Trevor Noah provides a very different perspective on growing up as the child of Black and white parents, demonstrating the differences in how racism functions in different countries. This book is not specifically aimed at younger readers.

The residential school system in Canada had a major, lasting impact on Indigenous communities. Similar schools also existed in the United States.

A condensed timeline provides context for anti-Black racism and the legacy of enslavement, segregation, and mass incarceration in the United States.

Kimberlé Crenshaw coined the term “intersectionality,” which is discussed at length in This Book Is Anti-Racist. This interview provides more context on what intersectionality means in the present day.

Anti-trans bathroom bills are a major issue in American politics right now. Jewell notes that because she is cisgender, she does not have to worry about which bathroom to use. For transgender, nonbinary, and gender non-conforming people, discriminatory laws make things far more difficult.

Apartheid-era South Africa violently enforced racial categories in order to control people and uphold white supremacy. Some of these categories could be arbitrary and subject to change depending on political whim. For example, for some time, Japanese people were legally considered white (or “honorary white”) because of the state of trade relations between Japan and South Africa. 

The Black Panther Party was an important part of American history and the fight for the rights of Black people across the country.
